LOS ANGELES, Mar 27 (Reuters) – Jane Campion received the Academy Award for best director for her gothic western „The Power of the Dog“ on Sunday, becoming only the third woman in the 94-year history of the Oscars to take home the award.
The New Zealand native joins Kathryn Bigelow and Chloe Zhao as the only women to win the award as a female director, a field still dominated by men in Hollywood.
Campion, 67, was previously nominated for her 1993 drama „The Piano.“ She lost the award that year to Steven Spielberg, who won it for „Schindler’s List (SIX:SCHN),“ but won an Oscar for best original screenplay.
Spielberg was nominated again this year for his remake of the classic musical „Love Without Barriers“ along with Kenneth Branagh for his semi-autobiographical drama „Belfast“.
